GREEN HIGHWAY POLICY, 2015

Recently launched by Union Ministry Of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping with the aim to promote greening of Highway Corridors with participation of the community, farmers, private sectors, NGOs and government institutions.

Green Highway concept includes a roadways design integrating the functionalities of transport and ecological sustainability of the ecosystem and public health to go hand in hand.

Key features

– Rs 1000 Cr. per year will be available for plantation purpose.
-1 percent cost of total projects of highways will be kept for highway plantation and its maintenance.
-NHAI will act as a fund manager.
-The policy will generate about 5 lakh employment opportunities from rural areas.
-Every planted tree will be counted and timely auditing will be done.
-Strong monitoring mechanism will be done by using ISRO’s Bhuvan and GAGAN satellite systems.

The Policy will help in curtailing the numbers of road accidents and making India pollution free as well. It’s implementation will definitely help in bridging the forest gap under National Forest Policy.
